Pigeon Peas (Arhar)

The Pigeon Pea probably originated in tropical Africa but is now popular in SE Asia, the Caribbean, east and west Africa and the tropics of the U.S. It is a shrubby, drought-tolerant, fast-growing legume with a long tap root and a mass of fibrous roots. It can grow up to 4 m (13 ft) in height but is not tolerant to low temperatures or frost.

India is the major producer of green gram in the world and grown in almost all the
States. It is grown in about 36 lakh hectares with the total production of about 17 lakh
tonnes of grain with a productivity of about 500 kg/ha. The important green gram growing
States in the country are Orissa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat,
Rajasthan and Bihar.

Kidney bean or rajma is a must-have legume that is widely used in various traditional dishes in India and abroad. It takes its name from appearance and resemblance to colour of Kidneys, These nourishing legumes are procured from the herbaceous plant, scientifically termed Phaseolus vulgaris. Although native to Mexico and Central America, different varieties of these beans are extensively cultivated across the world, including in India.
